Pentru buna funcționare a unui site web, deseori este necesară utilizarea unui anumit tip de fișier denumit cookie.
Cookie-urile sunt fișiere de dimensiune mică, sub 4 KB, salvate pe dispozitivul de navigare (desktop PC, laptop, smartphone sau tabletă). Scopul lor este de a stoca informații despre utilizatorul respectivului site web sau a server-ului. în mod standard, majoritatea browserelor web au activată opțiunea de acceptare a cookie-urilor, cu posibilitatea de a dezactiva această caracteristică.
De asemenea, orice utilizator poate să vizualizeze cookie-urile stocate în dispozitivul de navigare, sau de a le șterge.
Originea unui cookie poate fi direct de pe server-ul web, al site-ului în cauză sau din surse externe. Spre exemplu, prin utilizarea anumitor servicii externe (librării de analiză a traficului web) anumite cookie-uri, ce nu fac obiectul direct al site-ului web în cauză, pot fi acceptate de către dispozitivul de navigare al utilizatorului.
Cookie-urile au setată și o perioadă de valabilitate, după expirarea acesteia, cookie-urile în cauză fiind distruse automat.
